The Language of Scholarships
This survey proposal was created in collaboration with James Rivard and Cotter Eyre to research how Mount Royal University students perceive scholarship application language as it may have an effect on the rate of students applying for financial aid.
The content below does not include the entirety of the paper and the survey created. If you are interested in learning more about the paper, please feel free to contact me to discuss it at length.

01
Topic
The topic of this study is how Mount Royal University students view the language presented in scholarship applications.
02
Purpose
We believe that the results of this study could be useful to universities, allowing them to improve their scholarship application process and increase rates of scholarship application among students. As a result, the additional support provided by the university will improve students’ academic performance by granting them extra funding for their education.

03
Current Research
In most of the literature reviewed, the studies were conducted in American contexts and may not be applicable to Canadians; therefore, further research must be conducted in a Canadian context for the sake of replicability and reliability. However, current studies have uncovered that the requirements listed in scholarships, with little support to understanding jargon, was a massive deterrent and did little to help those in need.
04
Research Questions and Hypothesis
RQ1. How do Mount Royal University students perceive the language used throughout the internal scholarship process?
RQ2. Do Mount Royal University students feel the current internal scholarship process and terminology is inhibiting their ability to apply for funding?
Hypothesis: If Mount Royal University students perceive the language used by internal scholarships and the application process to be too complex and full of jargon, many will feel deterred from applying.
